Messier 109 is a nice spiral galaxy in the constellation of Ursa Major. It is classified by astronomers as a Barred Spiral Galaxy because of its easily visible central bar structure. The distinct spiral arms are believed to be areas of intense star formation.
The estimated distance to Messier 109 is 55 million light years and astronomers also estimate that Messier 109 is moving away from us at 1142 kilometers per second.
