Messier 42 - The Orion Nebula
 
Constellation - Orion
 
Distance - approximately 1,600 light years.
 
This image of the central potion of the Orion Nebula [Messier 42 and Messier 43] is a cropped and higher resolution of my wide field image of the Orion Nebula region. Messier 43 is the bright comma-shaped area above and to the left of the center of the image. Messier 42 is the bright central portion of the nebula.

The final image above is a composite of 30 second, 1 minute and 6 minute exposures. Short exposures were layered into the image with multiple layer masks with Photoshop CS4 to improve the detail of the central portion of the nebula.
 
The main field exposure is an RGB image consisting of 48 minutes per color channel.
